Description
Bharatanatyam features an exquisite array of head adornments. The principal part, Forehead jewellery or headset, consists of a long Nethi Chutti with a pendant and two brooches called Surya birai and Chandra birai, which portray the sun and moon and are worn on either side of the head. They depict Lord Nataraja wearing the moon and stars as jewels, as described in the Dhyana Slokam of Abinayadarpnam by Nandhikeshwara.
The above displayed is a high-on-demand Head Set, designed with a combination of pearls, maroon green kemp stones. It’s a broad Head Set covering the entire forehead. The array starts with small white pearls, followed by maroon kemp stones, and again a line of pearls, kemps and pearl hangings. The shaped pendant with a green kemp in the centre and surrounded with maroon kemps and pearl hangings enhance its beauty. The piece extends towards the partition and is 3 layered, with green stones in the middle and maroon kemps on either side.
Surya birai and Chandra birai are given separately. A circular piece adorned with green and maroon kemps and white pearls as Surya birai and Chandra birai in the shape of half-moon with the same adornments.
