Description

Thattukazhi and Thattupalaka are both traditional aspects of rhythm, percussion, and dance performance. Both play an important role in Indian art forms such as Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, and more. The Thattukazhi is a percussion instrument. The Thattukazhi’s sound enhances the rhythmic cycles, allowing dancers to stay on track with the music’s beat and indicating the beginning of a sequence or a shift in rhythm.

The journey of a Nattuvanar begins with a Thattukazhi and Thattupalaka since the practice and path of holding a Nattuvangam begin here. Thattupalaka is a rectangular-shaped wooden block that generates a loud and resonant sound when beats are played on it. Thattukazhi is a longer wooden stick used to make a higher-pitched sound when struck in the Thattupalaka. These factors contribute to the overall framework of classical dance performances by ensuring synchronization, rhythm, and order. Now instead of wood, fiber is also commonly used.

Explore Zara’s diverse Thattukazhi and Thattupalaka collections, made out of various woods and fibres, and take your first step towards becoming a Nattuvanar.
